Mount Olive Democrats were proud to host an informative Town Hall featuring Chief Stephen Beecher on July 14, 2020. We learned how layered and complicated police work is and how the department is working on building relationships with the community. The Chief recognized the historical problems with racial justice and the need for improvement. He does not see police reform as a specific destination but that continuous improvement is needed. The Chief also expressed his appreciation to the community and our local government for the support that has contributed to Mount Olive being one of the safest communities in New Jersey. The Chief closed by saying, “If people have ideas, I am more than willing to listen.”
We thank the Chief for sharing his time and knowledge with us. We hope this will contribute to improving communication and help build a better Mount Olive.
Thank you also to everyone who submitted questions in advance. Thank you also to Councilman Alex Roman, Board of Education member Dr. Antoine Gayles, Democratic Candidate for Freeholder Cary Amaro, March on racism and police brutality organizer Temi Akanbi and so many others for joining the Zoom town hall.
In our monthly meetings, we aim to provide the community with guest speakers covering topics in a non-partisan way. We appreciate your feedback on this presentation and welcome ideas for future speakers.
